What is FSN Cage Football?
Street Cage Soccer is a football coaching session with emphasis on developing individual skills, tricks, exhibition football, teaching special tricks and goal scoring techniques.
It is suitable for boys and girls from ages 8 to 18 years.
Each session lasts for 3 hours. SCS type initiatives have a proven track record
of attracting young vulnerable people into diversionary activities and away from
anti social behaviour. MFSN currently deliver SCS in five areas of Knowsley effected
by high crime and anti social behaviour. It attracts over 500 young people a month,
of an average age of 14 years.
“SCS is, and has to be,
flexible and can be
moved and placed in any
area were anti-social
behaviour arises.”
Fire Support Network can deliver SCS to the heart of communities. It is delivered
where young people live and interact and were problems manifest themselves by causing
friction and disruption to local residents.
The unique feature of SCS is that we are delivering SCS in the heart of communities
where young people live and interact and where problems manifest themselves. SCS
sessions are held at night and at times when high levels of anti social behaviour
occur. Margaret Mills from L14 Community House in Huyton, Liverpool says,“Street
Cage Soccer has made a real difference to our community, giving our young people
something to do at night and it has become a focus for the community. We certainly
have noticed a decrease in the level of anti social behaviour.”
The SCS approach is to work with partners to identify localities which are characterised
by social disadvantage and blighted by criminal and anti social behaviour. SCS seeks
to help transform these localities and specific spaces within them. We understand
that changing communities will not be achieved by taking people out of the area.
Rather, it is necessary to take new resources, opportunities and facilities into
the area and to make them more widely available. This is an approach supported by
the Respect Task Force guidance on the use of sport and physical activity.
Richard Davis Youth Children and Young Peoples Manager, Merseyside Fire & Rescue
Service (MFRS). MFRS is recognised nationally and internationally for its work with
children and young people. Street Cage Soccer is a great example of how we use diversionary
activities to positively influence young people through fun and sport to reduce
deliberate fires, hoax calls and attacks on firefighters. Because most children
and young people view the Fire Service in a broadly positive way, we can use the
brand to influence not only antisocial behaviour but also support a wide range of
cross cutting local area priorities which include smoking cessation, healthy eating,
tackling obesity etc.
MFSN is currently developing a health initiative with Knowsley PCT. Using football
and its integral appeal to young males in particular, we are introducing health
education in to the SCS sessions.
SCS is, and has to be, flexible and can be moved and placed in any area were anti-social
behaviour arises. It can be held in areas where in a cage, or on a section of grass,
car park or tarmac. Our sessions are held in areas where high level anti-social
behaviour occurs during the evening and on the days leading upto and including the
weekends.
